Every Which Way Blog Tour and Giveaway

Severine Blake has seen far too many friends taken down in the crossfires of dating. She devises a precise course of action to protect her heart. The plan is working very well...until she meets Thayer and Macsen.
When the Sloan brothers come into her life, nothing is the same.

Thayer is self-possessed, arrogant and used to getting what he wants. Being near him leaves Severine unsteady and shaken. He makes her question everything.
Macsen contradicts his brother in every way. His calm personality captivates her. Severine is drawn to him instantly.
But Severine quickly discovers that when you want something, that want can turn wicked. Giving in is not always easy, especially when your heart refuses to give up the fight.

What little illusion of love Severine has is soon destroyed. Every option is broken, and the protection she has built around her heart instantly crumbles.

There's just no right way with the Sloan brothers. Synopsis taken from Goodreads

My Thoughts:

Wow!Just wow! I was not expecting to pick this book up and not be able to put it down but that's exactly what happened.

Calia Read, you have made a "slam dunk" with Every Which Way, I know I'm a dork but I had to make reference to the basketball pun. The character's were believable and I completely could relate to them. I enjoyed the romance and boy did it get steamy.

Severine is a strong female character and I loved being inside of her head.  Watching the relationship between her, Thayer and Macsen unfold was wonderful to read. I found myself torn between team Macsen and team Thayer and then BAM!

Wow, I just didn't expect that one!  I was completely shocked at what I was reading and felt all of the emotion Severine was experiencing.  My lips are sealed on this one, I will just tell you, you need to read this one!

The main character's are amazing but she's created wonderful side character's as well.  Severine has great friends and I enjoyed reading the conversations and banter they had back and forth.

Calia Read leaves you wanting more of the Sloan brother's and Severine and that's exactly she's going to give you.  Breaking the Wrong is scheduled for publication in 2013, I cannot wait!  I cannot say enough about this wonderful book except just go buy it and you'll can thank me for it later.

Insurgent by Veronica Roth {Divergent #2}

One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature. {Synopsis taken from Goodreads}

My thoughts:

Wow! Just holy freaking wow! I absolutely loved this amazing book. I was extremely skeptical because of all the reviews I had seen and thought it wouldn't live up to the first book. It. completely. did.

So many sophomore books don't live up to the first book but this was just not the case with Insurgent.  Veronica Roth's writing style is still amazing. I just devoured this book and loved the fact that it was over 500 pages. I could just keep reading and loving Tris and Four.  One of my worries was that the romance I enjoyed so much in Divergent wouldn't be present in this book, it was even better!  Tris and Four are definitely developing their relationship and it's growing to be more and I love being a  part of it.

The only thing honestly that bugged me about this book was Tris.  I realize that she has just lost both of her parents so she's allowed to fall apart but she drove me a little crazy in this book but it worked really well.  Roth was able to tie up the broken Tris and make it a pretty amazing story.

Their are so many "holy oh my gosh's" in this book, some I just was not expecting and I just loved that.  I enjoy being shocked by a story and Insurgent definitely did this, especially the ending. Wow! What a cliffhanger. I just was not expecting that!

I absolutely cannot wait to read the third book of Veronica Roth's.  She herself is evolving as an author and I'm just so happy to be reading her wonderful books.  Her next book cannot come out soon enough.

I give it 5 big fabulous rainbows!

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Easy by Tammara Webber out May 25, 2012

 Synopsis
When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she’s single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, stalked by her ex’s frat brother, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Her econ professor gives her an email address for Landon, the class tutor, who shows her that she’s still the same intelligent girl she’s always been. As Jacqueline becomes interested in more from her tutor than a better grade, his teasing responses make the feeling seem mutual. There’s just one problem—their only interactions are through email.

Meanwhile, a guy in her econ class proves his worth the first night she meets him. Nothing like her popular ex or her brainy tutor, Lucas sits on the back row, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. At a downtown club, he disappears after several dances that leave her on fire. When he asks if he can sketch her, alone in her room, she agrees—hoping for more.

Then Jacqueline discovers a withheld connection between her supportive tutor and her seductive classmate, her ex comes back into the picture, and her stalker escalates his attention by spreading rumors that they’ve hooked up. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

I am so excited for this one. I love Tammara Webber and this book just sounds awesome!  What are you Waiting on this Wednesday?

Enter Will Cooper: the attractive twenty-one year old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for slam poetry. After a night together that turns out to be everything but the expected, both Layken and Will are left with feelings they never knew they could have. Unfortunately in Layken's life, things are never what they seem. Just as quickly as it develops, their relationship is derailed by a shocking revelation, sparking a tumultuous battle between their hearts and their ethics.

As if the dramatic turn of events in her life isn't enough, Layken is slammed again when her mother reveals a secret of her own. A secret so intense, all of Layken's current problems pale in comparison to her seemingly insurmountable future. Unable to confront the changes that lie ahead of her, Layken ignores her conscience as she turns to Will for solace. Struggles ensue as both Layken and Will search for a balance between that which keeps them apart and the feelings that pull them together.
Slammed is the first installment of a two-part series. The second installment, Point of Retreat, is available now! {Synopsis taken from Goodreads}

My Thoughts~
Thank you Abbi Glines for posting about this on Facebook, thank you Facebook for just existing so that I was able to get this recommendation, thank you Goodreads for the community that let me dive further to see what all the hype was about this book,  and thank you Colleen Hoover well, for rocking my freaking world with a book, an amazing book that kept me reading all day and night.  I devoured Slammed and Point of Retreat in one day, I've never read two books in a day; well I have now! I read and cried and not just those little sissy tears, no I freakin boohooed crocodile tears. This book is amazing! Let' me tell you why.

Layken or Lake as she is called. I love this girl. She is complex and not your typical teenage girl. She's interesting, feisty and intriguing because she cares about her family deeply. She can be moody and frustrating but that made her so much more real to me. She's so feisty and likeable that I just loved her development as a character.  She brought so much to this story and I really enjoyed reading about her.

Will. Oh Colleen do you ever know how to make a grown woman feel like a cougar.  When you created Will you made a real honest to goodness swoon-worthy character.  He seems flawless but he isn't, he's complex and deep and I just loved him.  His story broke my heart and the situation he is placed in. Too young he is given such a huge responsibility but he really steps up to the plate! Thank you Colleen for Will.

The side characters are enjoyable as well. All of them. They aren't just put there without purpose, Colleen has interwoven them beautifully in this amazing story to add even more flare.

This story is an emotional journey that I just devoured.  This book will stay with me for a long time and I am certain I will reread about Layken and Will again because it is just so good.

I cannot stress enough how much I loved this book, not just enjoyed, LOVED.  Colleen is an amazing author and I actually feel privileged to be one of her first readers.  This book is going to be a huge hit so I highly recommend you go read this book now!

Divergent by Veronica Roth

  • Reading level: Ages 14 and up
  • Paperback: 576 pages
  • Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books; Reprint edition (February 28, 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0062024035
  • ISBN-13: 978-0062024039

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.
Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the YA scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance. (Synopsis taken from Amazon)

My Thoughts~

WOW! Just, wow! What a book!  I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting. I am still amazed at this story. I am now among all of the crazy Divergent fans anxiously anticipating Insurgent May 1. It cannot come soon enough.

Beatrice or Tris as she wishes to be called was awesome! She's tough and vulnerable and believable. She isn't confused and silly; she's a lot more than that. While she does struggle with her choice she only does because choosing otherwise affects her family.  I loved her bravery that she shows when she chooses.  I actually teared up at the choosing ceremony. It was done so well. One of my favorite parts of the book, but believe me there are so many favorites in this book.

The world that Veronica Roth has created is creative and the concept is so different.  I was very much expecting something close to The Hunger Games and it just isn't that. It is so different! I actually enjoyed this so much better than The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games to me did not have romance, Divergent does and it is soooo good! I love Four. He's so enjoyable to read about and their romance was so good!  It isn't forced or pushed on you or rushed at all, it just happens and as it is  you're pulled into it and you find yourself giggling for Tris and Four.

I did have a few issues with this story that I don't understand why they were put in but I'd have to spoil it so lets just say I'm going to trust the amazing Veronica Roth with this story and I am willing to go into it wherever she may take it! Amazing book, go read it now!

    "Waiting on" Wednesday 3/28

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone. (Synopsis taken from Goodreads.)

    Starters by Lissa Price

Thank you Netgalley.com and Delacorte Books for Young Readers for allowing me to review an ARC copy of Starters by Lissa Price in exchange for my honest review.

    Synopsis:

Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie. Callie's only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man.

He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie's head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, living in her mansion, driving her cars, and going out with a senator's grandson. It feels almost like a fairy tale, until Callie discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations' plans are more evil than Callie could ever have imagined. . .(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

    My review:

I really enjoyed this! I didn't think I was going to but I sure was wrong. The idea just didn't strike me as something that I would enjoy, boy was I wrong!  This book was very original and kept me on the edge of my seat.  It was creepy and in a wonderful way. It was more plot driven and fast paced, especially the last 20%. Price did a wonderful job with pacing, I kept turning pages and then wham!, out of nowhere, something completely unexpected!

Callie as a character, I really enjoyed her. She was headstrong, resourceful and a fighter. I understood why she was willing to allow her body to be rented out, she was hopeless and this was a chance for her and her little brother who she was so responsible for. I did have issues with some of the details in this book.  I felt as if I knew more I would have enjoyed the book even more.

The plot was great! It revolves around Callie realizing that her "renter" is plotting murder against someone.  She tries to find out who the "ender" wants dead and from this point  there were so many twists and turns that I just didn't expect and I never saw them coming.  I'm definitely excited for Enders to come out in December, Lissa Price has set this ending up to be a hit!

    Book Breakups

Lori from Pure Imagination has a fabulous meme! Book Breakups, we've all had to do it; you know the "it's me, not you", for whatever reason we just weren't compatible. I love this idea Lori, I know you said you struggled with this one, it's great!

Review: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

    Release Date: January 12, 2012
    Age Group: Young Adult
    Received From: Purchased from Amazon
    IBSN: 9780062072030
    Blurb:
Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She's been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild - a savage - and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile - everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky. (Synopsis taken from Goodreads.)

    My thoughts:
This book took what felt like forever to get in to. I was so confused by the aether and the storms, this book is just unlike anything I've read.  It was just difficult for me to get in to.  I honestly know the moment when I actually couldn't put it down, it was page 98 when they met.

I am so glad that I didn't give up on this book! It was wonderful. I enjoyed the characters so much, Aria and Perry were enjoyable to read about and I love that the book is told from her point of view and his. I loved to be in both of their heads and feel what they were feeling and see what they were seeing.  I feel as if I would have lost so much of the story had it not been told from both point of views.

I loved the romance in this book. It was so enjoyable and swoon-worthy.  Aria and Perry don't have insta-love at all. It's well developed and not forced, sweet and appropriate with just the right amount of romance. I love Perry and Aria!

Veronica Rossi created completely different and complex worlds for her backdrop in this beautiful story. Her main characters Aria and Perry are lovable and enjoyable and wonderfully written. I found myself rooting for them all the way.  The supporting characters were great as well.  I loved Talon and his relationship with Perry.

This story has twists, turns and surprises around every chapter and I couldn't put it down (after page 98 of course).  I loved it right up until the clever and suspenseful ending!  Veronica Rossi has created an amazing and superb debut novel that I cannot wait to continue reading with Through the Ever Night!

    4.5 Stars I loved it!

    Happy Reading Ya'll!
    Stephie

The problem is she landed in purgatory. And while it's not a fiery inferno, it's certainly no heaven. It's gray, ashen, and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do. Which doesn't leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what's really on her mind.

    Bonesaw.

Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment her killer deserves. And she's figured out just how to do it. She'll haunt him for the rest of his days.
    It'll be brutal . . . and awesome.

But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen's obsessive haunting cracks the foundations of purgatory and jeopardizes her very soul. A risk she's willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.

Velveteen can't help herself when it comes to breaking rules . . . or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

Amythest Eyes by Debbie Brown Blog Tour from Making Connections

Waking up in the hospital from the car accident that claimed his mother’s life, 15-year-old Tommy is told his father is on his way. Unaware of his father’s true identity or the reason he left so long ago, the teen is unprepared for the reality of the life he must now lead. In the blink of an eye Tommy finds himself on an alien vessel…his father is not from Earth!

The challenges Tommy face go beyond adapting to a new home and school. But first, he has to survive Jayden…the reluctant, unsympathetic tutor, tasked to help him fit in. When he finally thinks things are getting better, things come crashing down as he learns that being born with amethyst eyes has made him the target of some very unfriendly beings.

    Excerpt

“Hold on!” Tommy’s mother yelled as she tried to steer their old Cherokee from the truck’s path. Tommy never saw it coming. It was just there, on the wrong side of the road and out of control.
“Mom?” Closing his eyes tight, he grabbed hold of the arm she placed across his chest to shield him from the crash, and as suddenly as the truck had appeared, his world went black.
The smell of the smoke was the first thing he noticed. Opening his eyes, he saw that they were still in the jeep. What was left of it. His entire body screamed with pain as he tried to move. “Mom,” he called. She was pinned to her seat by the steering wheel. A trickle of blood ran from the corner of her mouth.
         “T-om-my,” she managed.
Tears filled his eyes. Don’t die, he thought to himself. Removing his seatbelt, he attempted to slide closer to her. A sharp stab of pain surprised him, releasing a wave of dizziness. Sweat beaded on his forehead. “Mom…”
Stirring ever so slightly, she tried to speak. Her voice was barely a whisper. “Join…the…p-pen-dant.” The effort seemed to cost her greatly. She coughed and let out a small cry as she slipped into unconsciousness.
Tommy’s mind raced. The pendant, the pendant. He knew what she meant, he just never believed it. He thought she was joking when she said it was their 911 line to his father. Forcing himself to focus, he pulled on her chain until he located the clasp. Sliding it open and removing the chain, he secured it around his neck. Then he proceeded to join the two stone halves. Would his father come? Where was he? What had Mom meant when she told me ‘you will know your father’s world soon enough’?
A burst of coloured light filled the car. Tommy dropped the pendant as if it had suddenly become too hot to handle. Before the pendant hit his chest, the molecules shifted, rendering it invisible. He knew now that his father would come. Another wave of dizziness hit as he gazed one last time at his mother.
“I love you, Mom,” he whispered as darkness claimed him.

Tommy’s stomach knotted as he recognized the antiseptic smell that could only belong to a hospital. Opening his eyes, the memory of the accident came slowly back. He began to cry. The heart monitor raced in response to the sudden onrush of emotion, and he couldn’t control the sobs that took hold of his body. He didn’t try to either.
A nurse stepped in to check on him. After a quick evaluation, she wrapped her arms around him tight, and without saying a word, let him grieve over his loss.
When the tears were all but spent, Jenna (according to her name tag) brushed the hair from his forehead. He felt so empty and alone, even in the comfort of her arms. His breaths caught sharply when she gently repositioned the brace around his shattered leg, but he said nothing.
“I’m so sorry for your loss,” she said in a soft voice. She helped him settle back in the bed, stood and checked on his various tubes and wires. “Your father has contacted us and will arrive in a few days.” Pulling a pad from her pocket, she checked her notes.
“You aren’t due for more pain medication for another hour.” She shoved the paper back in her pocket. “But if the pain is too intense, I can-”
“I don’t want it.” He cut her off.
She smiled in a gentle manner. “Well, we’ll wait and see, ok?”

On the day of his father’s arrival, Tommy stood in the bathroom with the help of his crutches and examined his features closely. He wondered how much he looked like his father. Did he have the same amethyst eyes, or the strange gold highlights in his hair? The glow of the overhead bulb seemed to accentuate the unearthliness of his most prominent features.
Jenna poked her head into the room. “Are you ready?”
He avoided her gaze. “I still have a few things to pack.”
“To meet your father, I mean.” Without missing a beat, she walked over to him, placed his hair quickly and proceeded to escort him to the door.
“I can’t.” He stopped before stepping out into the hall. “He left almost thirteen years ago. I don’t even remember what he looks like. I was only two...” his voice trailed off.
Jenna placed a comforting hand on his arm. “He’s as nervous as you are, and I don’t think you’ll have any trouble recognizing him. Let’s go, gorgeous.” She winked at him in an attempt to lighten the mood, but her support and reassurance were genuine.
Jenna led Tommy to a private lounge where a tall, uniformed man stood by the window, looking out over the city. Tommy didn’t recognize the blue-and-black uniform but thought nothing of it. The commander turned at the sound of the door opening, and two sets of amethyst eyes met for the first time in years. A silent exchange of acknowledgement passed between the two.
Jenna stood, hands on hips. “Now don’t tell me you’re one of those cold military types who can’t risk an emotional display by hugging a son you haven’t seen in years.”
Jenna’s outburst caused the commander to blush ever so slightly. He made his way over to his son. Tommy let his crutches fall to the floor as he held tight to his father.
“Leave us,” the commander ordered with no room for discussion. He lifted Tommy’s chin and examined him closely. “I am saddened at the loss of your mother. This was not how we had planned it.”
“What do you mean?” Tommy’s could barely get the words out.
“Come, sit.” A strong arm held Tommy by the waist, and guided him to the couch.    Taking a deep breath the commander continued, “As you know, your mother and I are of different origins. She chose not to follow me but to remain here and raise you until the age of eighteen. At this point, I was to return and give you the choice of worlds.”
“The choice of worlds?” Tommy repeated. “I’d never even thought about a military career.” Why would his father talk about this now?  “How far were you stationed that you couldn’t even write?” Painful questions Tommy usually avoided were beginning to stir inside.
A look of surprise crossed the commander’s face. Releasing the breath he had been holding he said, “I see your mother has not prepared you for this at all.” He passed a hand over his mouth and then tapped his watch twice.
“Yes, Commander?” A man’s voice filled the room.
“Molecular transport, on my mark.” Standing, he helped Tommy to his feet and collected the crutches. “I will show you my world, and I will explain.”
Confused, Tommy nervously accepted his father’s support.
Holding his son tight, the commander gave the order.
Tommy blinked as everything around him faded. He was no longer in the hospital lounge but on a raised platform at the back of a square, unadorned room. A shimmering glass wall separated them from the two men who sat at some kind of computer console. He froze in place. This was not possible. “Father…” Tommy whispered.
“All clear, Commander,” one of the two men said.
His father nodded to the officer. “Follow me,” he said to Tommy.
Tommy couldn’t move, couldn’t speak. He was trying to process what had just happened, but his mind wasn’t able to accept it. His heart rate shot up and his legs felt weak.
“Do you require assistance?” his father asked.
Forcing himself to focus, Tommy shook his head ‘no’ and hobbled forward.
“We will take it slow, one step at a time.” His father helped him down from the platform, and they stepped out of the room into a brightly lit, ice-blue corridor. “Are you able to walk, or would you prefer we-”
Tommy cut him off. “I can walk.” He took a few unsteady steps forward. “A bit.”
“Do you know where we are?” his father asked as they moved slowly down the corridor. The answer came as they made their way to the large, oval port hole at the end of the corridor. It showed Earth in all her glory, directly below them.
